Once Upon a Time dinner

“Once Upon a Time” is a magical literary experience created to celebrate stories written and performed by children from each elementary school in Iowa City. While the draw for some might be hearing our keynote author, David LaRochelle, the real highlight will be hearing students from 21 area elementary schools read their work. Each school in the Iowa City Community School District, as well as Regina and Willowwind, selects one student to read during the event. The result is an amazing testament to the talent of our youngest writers (and to their poise as their read for an audience of 300-plus). Each participating school receives a table of 10 so that educators, students and caregivers can be on hand to celebrate. That comes thanks to our friends at Terry, Lockridge and Dunn/WorldTrend Financial, with additional support from the Sheraton Iowa City.

Play Like a Champion: The power of guided participatory play

playingIsLearningJohn P. Spencer, Professor of Psychology, University of Iowa and Director, CHILDS Neuroimaging Laboratory will present a half hour talk on the importance of playing for learning. To give children a head start on academic success, more children are spending more time in instructional setting and less time playing. In his talk, Professor Spencer will review recent findings showing that playing and learning do not have to be put in opposition. Rather, play builds the very skills that are targeted in formal instructional settings and it just builds these skills more effectively.
