Comic Book Confidential – Workshop for Grades 5-8

Do you love comics? Do you have a standing appointment at Daydreams on Wednesdays? Want to know what it takes to make comics of your own? Now's your chance to learn, in this hands-on workshop with local artist and cartoonist Violet Austerlitz! Share your ideas, get feedback, and learn the fascinating process of transforming your ideas into comics. This workshop is for kids in grades 5-8. Drawing materials will be provided. Violet Austerlitz is an Iowa City artist, printmaker, and cartoonist. She loves monsters and nature and technology, and the ways the three of them collide and shape each other. Currently, she is charting these collisions in a collection of comics called The Satanic Mechanic. She’s also a long-time member of the Iowa City Press Co-Op, and finds eternal delight in being part of a community of artists. She studied printmaking and theatre at Truman State University, but is mostly self-taught, and a firm believer in doing things you don’t yet know how to do.

Darrin Crow: Talespinner & Troubadour

Darrin Crow is a storyteller from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Storytelling has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, whether it was listening to his aunts, uncles and grandparents talking about farming and coal mining in Iowa or immersing himself in Jules Verne and Tolkien up in his tree house. As a high school student he began volunteering at a living history museum. Here he found that he could use his love of telling stories to put people in touch with their heritage in a way they had not experienced before. In college he studied interpretive speech, and after college he worked as an actor and itinerant storyteller in Pennsylvania and Florida. In 1999 he returned to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and has been telling stories ever since. Over the last decade he has honed his craft by telling stories across the area in settings from church basements to major outdoor festivals. 10:30 a.m., Saturday February 24 at the hotelVetro

The Story Pirates Present: Stuck in the Stone Age

Story Pirates is an arts education organization based in New York City and Los Angeles. The group collects written works from students and youth and adapts these stories for the stage.  In Stuck in the Stone Age kids get to contribute their own ideas in the Story Pirates’ newest interactive comedy, in which Tom Edison (no relation to that Thomas Edison) and Dr. Marissa Morice return home from a wild adventure in the Stone Age only to discover their time machine has made an unexpected detour.
A loud zap, a flash of light, and Tom and Marissa appear on stage, reeling from having their bodies flattened into a sheet one atom thick, twisted around itself half a million times, and then put back together exactly as they were before (that’s time travel for you). They soon learn that to fix their machine and return to their own time (annoyingly, only six months in the future, but hey a lot can happen in six months), they will need the help and creativity of kids in the audience. Throughout the show, audiences learn about the building blocks of a good story, including how to create their own characters and how to give those characters an interesting problem to solve. With Stuck in the Stone Age, the Story Pirates bring the adventures of Tom and Marissa to life, while simultaneously proving that every kid has a story to tell.
