This year’s festival will be held virtually, with online programming on both days. A special video presentation, “Write Out Loud,” will premiere at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, featuring the grade-level winners in the One Book Two Book writing competition.

Looking for things to do on Saturday? We have you covered. All of the following features are available anytime, and are presented in conjunction with other long-time festival partners.

  • Create a Nature Journal: A nature journal is a fun way to record your thoughts and observations when you’re outside. Join Megan from Green Iowa AmeriCorps as she guides you through the process of making your own!
  • Special Storytimes: Our friends with the Children’s Department at the Iowa City Public Library have several storytimes to choose from, or you can watch them all.
  • Kinder Sing Along: Ready to sing? The Iowa Children’s Museum can help. Join them as you take a singing tour through the museum.
  •  Story Walks: Join the North Liberty Community Library for audio stories that celebrate snowy days!
  • For our junior high friends – it’s Jam time! The Iowa Youth Writing Project’s annuaJunior High Writing Jam is a special workshop and author Q&A just for junior high students. This year’s festivities will look a bit different, but the Jam must go on! This year’s digital Junior High Writing Jam will feature – live, on Zoom! – decorated YA (Young Adult) Literature author Dawn Quigley, who will read from her book Apple in the Middle and answer your questions about her writing process! There will also be a host of fun activities based on Apple in the Middle and a book giveaway. This is a great way for young writers to write, share their work, learn from an expert, and to meet other young writers. Register today!
  • The Little Free Library Citywide Tidy offers the chance to see some of the many Little Free Libraries in our community and to help to keep them in shape and ready to offer something new to read. More than 50 Little Free Libraries grace our community. Show appreciation to their stewards by helping with Green Iowa City’s Little Free Library Citywide Tidy! There are two ways to get involved: 1) Donate gently used books to help restock shelves or 2) Volunteer to tidy the LFLs.
    • If you sign up as a volunteer, Green Iowa City will email you addresses of 1-3 LFLs; your job will be to tidy the shelves any time March 6-7. For all who are able, walking is encouraged! The job is easier with 2 people. Bring along used books to restock shelves as needed. Collect books from friends & neighbors or your own house, or you can pick up books donated for this project from Mercer, Coralville Public Library, or ICPL on Friday, March 5, 4-6pm (bring your reusable bag).
    • If you sign up to donate books, please drop them off at Mercer Park Aquatic Center 9am-6pm Sunday, Feb. 28 or 6am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday, March 1-4. Sign Up here.
